ICARUS, and why flying too high might not actually be the biggest problem after all ...
When most people think of the story of Icarus, from Greek mythology, they usually recall that Icarus was a boy who had wings of wax and feathers made by his father so he could fly and escape Crete.
Before he sets off, Icarus' father warns him not to fly too high or the sun's heat will melt the wings.
The story goes on to tell how Icarus ignored his father's instructions and flew too close to the sun, and then the wax in his wings melted and he tumbled out of the sky and fell into the sea where he drowned.
This story has been told to generations of children, the message being - play it safe, obey your parents and listen to the experts - and also by inference...don't go too high.
But there’s a second part to this story that is almost never mentioned, and that is that Icarus was also warned not to fly too low because the damp from the mist that hung over the sea would clog his feathers and ruin the lift from his wings.
In fact flying too low is even more dangerous than flying too high because it seems deceptively safe.
Are You Flying Too Low?
I have usually found that it is not flying too high that scuppers people, but rather aiming too low, usually way, way too low.
If you think about your own life, are there any areas where you are flying too low, keeping in what seems like a safe comfort zone but that actually means that you don't make much headway or you find yourself repeatedly getting bogged down?
Maybe you have wanted to write a book, but almost never think about it now because you believe that you can't do it, or that it won't be of interest?
Or perhaps you have wanted to really get to grips with recovering from what happened to you as you were growing up, but it seems far too daunting or out of your reach?
Or maybe even that you have wanted to pursue spiritual enlightenment, but it seems to be for other people and not you, somehow you are not good enough or spiritual enough?
These are just a few examples of areas of our lives where messages from our past, and beliefs about who we are and what we are capable, of end up with us spending our lives barely getting off the ground.
Have you wanted to make a change in the world, but tell yourself 'What's the point' ?
I am not talking about wishing and hoping, or attracting what you want here, but the actuality that you are far more than you think you are, have far more to offer than you believe you have and can achieve so much more than you have dared to dream of.
This doesn't mean you have to do it all on your own, there are lots of resources to help.

AND the most important point is....just start doing it..!
It probably won't be perfect, there is a usually a learning curve first, and it probably won't be easy, if it was easy you would have likely done it by now.
But if you don't actually start, then how do you think you are going to be able to finish?
So find one thing that can you do this week and begin doing it so that you do get to really fly?
